Hi. I put this foot surgery off for a long time because of not knowing how I would be able to walk in a surgical boot. Am a senior citizen and have a lot of stairs here. I'm told I will have a visiting nurse to look at the wounde I have from removal of a bone spur from the top of my foot. But what is scary is the thought of getting out of my caregiver's car and getting up the stairs to come back home here. I am totally blind and having had a huge cast years back, I just wonder if a surgical boot is something I won't be able to feel my foot in at all. Will only have this thing on for a week so that is one consolation. A home health worker will come in here to help 2 hours a day. just worried about being able to walk at all in a surgical boot without seeing. My prayers go out to Becky too with a foot ulcer and back spasms.
I had a surgical boot for a ruptured achilles a few years ago. You should be able to feel your foot in the boot. I had a bone spur from a fall removed from the top of my foot almost 15 years ago, and the boot was worn while there was swelling. I got Vicodin for the pain of the surgery, so you should be able to feel your foot. I also have 8 stairs to go up to my apartment, the one where I was when I ruptured my achilles and where I live now. My guess is you'll do just fine. At least you have someone coming over to help you a few hours a day, and you didn't rupture your achilles. THAT is a painful, long term rehab injury. Good luck! Bet you'll be feeling better before you know it.
thanks so much for the info. It really helps to have a site like this which has a lot of helpful information on it.
Hi Bea
First of all, thanks for your prayers. I just got home from the hospital tonight.
I have been wearing a surgical boot called a Cam Walker on my left foot for almost 10 years because of my recurring ulcers. There have been long stretches of time that I didn't need to wear it, but then the ulcer would come back. You just have to be very careful on steps since your foot with the boot takes up a lot more space than your foot in a normal shoe. Be careful and good luck.
